Groups & events

Retreats for groups of every kind.

Not every group is a company, a church, or a wedding. If you need a private property with room to gather, room to sleep, and room to expand past the bed count, this is that property.

The short version

Retreats for groups of every kind.

Some groups do not fit a category. A board, a club, a nonprofit, a sports team, a writing group, a homeschool co-op, a band. The requirement is the same: somewhere private, somewhere to gather, and enough beds.

You book the whole property, so the shape of your weekend is yours to set. There are several rooms to meet in, 10 acres outside, and room for camp trailers and tents when the group is larger than the lodge.

Tell us what your group does and how many people are coming. We will tell you honestly whether the property fits.

What a group actually needs

Most group rentals fail on the same three things. There is one room big enough and nowhere to break out. There is a hard bed count and no way past it. And there is another party on the other side of a wall.

This property answers all three. You book all 10 acres and the whole lodge, so nothing is shared and nobody else is on site. There are several rooms to gather in on two floors. And when the group is larger than the beds, the land takes the difference.

Rooms to gather in

The family room seats a group around a stone fireplace under a vaulted ceiling. It is the room everyone ends up in.

The movie theater has four full-size reclining couches, a 200-inch screen, a 4K projector, and a small stage at the front. Show something to the whole group there, or use it for a film, or leave it for the evening.

The upstairs landing has a sofa, armchairs, and a large TV, and three bedrooms open onto it. The dining table seats the group at one sitting. The game room has a billiards table, a skee-ball lane, foosball, darts, three arcade cabinets, and a card table. The deck holds a session outdoors in good weather.

Room to grow past the bed count

The lodge has six bedrooms. If your group is bigger, the property still works.

There is space for two or three camp trailers, each with electric, water, and sewer hookups. A second graveled area near the gate takes extra trailers. There are flat, cleared camping pads on the land next door.

Groups bring trailers up for the extra rooms and keep the lodge for the meals and the sessions. Tell us the headcount and we will work out how it fits.

Fast Wi-Fi, and no cell signal

The Wi-Fi is fast and it reaches the whole lodge and the deck. It supports Wi-Fi calling. A group can stream, present, and take calls over it.

Cell service in the forest is unreliable and depends on the carrier. For some groups that is the reason to come. Either way, tell people to download maps and turn on Wi-Fi calling before they leave town.

Outside, and how far it is to anywhere

The property has a lit sport court with pickleball and half-court basketball. There is also a disc golf course, a level field, a firepit, and forest to walk in.

Flagstaff is about 45 minutes north and Payson about 45 minutes south. The Blue Ridge Reservoir and the Rim Road are within 15 minutes. At 7,500 feet with no town in any direction, the night sky is the other thing groups remember.

How to book

Talk to us directly, not through Airbnb or Vrbo.

Book an ordinary stay on whichever platform you like. An event is different. Airbnb and Vrbo are built to sell nights, and their rules limit what we can plan with you inside a booking. We cannot coordinate an event through a platform message thread.

So email us instead. We answer vendor questions, catering questions, and equipment rental questions ourselves, and we can tell you who we already work with locally. None of that fits in a booking request.

Do this early. Groups that write to us a year out get the date they want and a plan that fits the property. Groups that ask three weeks out get whatever is left.

Questions

What planners ask about group retreats.

What kinds of groups stay at Spoonbill Lodge?

Boards, clubs, nonprofits, sports teams, writing and art groups, homeschool co-ops, bands, and reunions of every kind. The requirement is normally the same: somewhere private, somewhere to gather, and enough beds. Tell us what your group does and we will tell you honestly whether the property fits.

Is there more than one room to meet in?

Yes, on two floors. The family room seats a group around a stone fireplace. The movie theater seats one facing a 200-inch screen with a small stage. The upstairs landing, the dining table, the game room, and the deck each take a smaller group.

Can the group be larger than the number of beds?

Yes. There is space for two or three camp trailers, each with electric, water, and sewer hookups. A second graveled area near the gate takes extra trailers, and there are flat, cleared camping pads next door. Some groups bring trailers for the extra rooms and keep the lodge for the meals and the sessions.

Do we get the whole property to ourselves?

Yes, always. There is no other group on site and nothing is shared. You book all 10 acres, the lodge, the deck, the sport court, and the field for your dates. We do not rent individual bedrooms.

Is the Wi-Fi good enough to work from?

Yes. It is fast and it reaches the whole lodge and the deck, and it supports Wi-Fi calling. Cell service in the forest is unreliable and depends on the carrier, so download maps and turn on Wi-Fi calling before you leave town.
